As the economy begins to reopen, it is time to Reboot, Restart, Reopen, Revive and/or Kick-start ourselves, our teams, our clients and our businesses. In doing so, there are so many things that we as business owners have to do, to think about, and to worry about. As always, the only way to get through this is to prioritize and plan. Here are my 3 Keys to Leading your team and your business into and through your Reboot.
Key #1 – Manage your energy. There are a lot of things, many unexpected, that are going to be a drain on your energy as businesses open back up with constantly changing restrictions, so focus on conserving your energy. There will be many daily draws on your energy pool so you must be focused on not over-extending yourself, as your team and clients will need you to be at the top of your game for several weeks. At the same time as you are managing your energy, be sure to manage your emotions as well. There will be a lot of F.U.D. (fear, uncertainty, doubt) out there, so be the positive one who controls your emotions and helps those around you feel safe and controlled as well. One way to manage your energy and emotions is by following Key #2.
Key #2 – Manage your priorities. With all the daily distractions, both real and imagined in this internet world, you must establish and focus on your priorities. There will always be more than you can possibly get done in any given day or week as we restart, so make sure you get the most important things done first. Daily and weekly discussions with your team will also help them to focus on priorities. Lean on your priorities to help you make decisions when those unplanned interrupts come up. Create your weekly default calendar to focus the majority of your time on your highest priorities, then adjust as necessary to whatever the world throws at us. Some call this time management, but it is really managing your priorities and how you use them to allocate yourself to tasks.
Key #3 – Lead from the Front. Your team and your clients need you to be visible, to be out front leading the reboot. They will draw their confidence from yours and feed off your energy. Let them see you being positive, handling new challenges with a calmness that you may not even feel. They need you now more than ever, so by managing your Energy and Priorities, you can help them stay the course, fight through their F.U.D. and resume providing your clients with that same amazing service and products they are used to getting from you.
