Most business owners start their journey with a specific goal in mind—economic freedom, a particular mission, or even just out of necessity. But there is usually a “why” involved that is much bigger than just making money.
Some believe the purpose of a business is simply to solve a specific, practical problem for a customer and generate profit. They may see finding a deeper, existential “why” as unnecessary.
But what they’re missing is how a clearly defined purpose for both you and your business can drive RESULTS.
I recently spent time at Brad Sugars’ Masterclass on Purpose, and here are my 3 biggest takeaways:
1. Wimpy Goals = Wimpy Results
When you lack a clearly defined purpose, your goals tend to be less challenging. Just like overly aggressive goals can be demotivating, goals that aren’t challenging enough can be demotivating as well. There’s no push to learn more, to grow, and you settle for less, leading to a cycle of lowered expectations.
2. Never Stop Working on Your “Be”
The Formula for Success is Be x Do = Have. Most people know what they want to Have, and then focus on the things they need to Do in order to have what they want. But they forget that the most important part of the formula is who they need to Be. When you have a bigger purpose, you strive to be better, you achieve more, and you have a bigger impact.
3. Purpose leads to Fulfillment
These are the intangible, enduring results that change lives and communities. Purpose is about who you are and the legacy you leave behind.
While a mission is what you do (the “what” and the “how”), your purpose is the “why” that fuels you when things get difficult. When your business is aligned with a clear purpose, it ceases to be just a job and becomes a vehicle for lasting impact.
