“CEO” is often one of the most misused titles in small to medium-sized businesses.
The title doesn’t truly become meaningful until there is a leadership team to lead. But there is a specific moment when the CEO mindset must kick in: when you transition from growth mode to scale mode.
To successfully scale, you need to shift from an operational mindset to a leadership and future-focused mindset. This requires an entirely new cadence.
Here are the five areas where a true CEO should focus their time:
1. Staff and Team Alignment
Your people are your biggest bottleneck—and your biggest lever.
- The Monday Rule: Use Monday mornings for staff meetings to ensure 100% alignment on the week’s top priorities.
- Mentorship: Look beyond your direct reports to identify future leaders. Spend time mentoring them now to build a sustainable future.
2. Know Your Numbers
Checking your bank balance isn’t enough. As a CEO, you need a weekly cycle of reviewing:
- Cash flow and debt management.
- Margins and labor rates.
- Non-cash KPIs and critical ratios.
3. High-Value Relationships
Every week, dedicate time to your key customers and vendors. Whether it’s a phone call, an email, or an in-person visit, your job is to ensure your key accounts feel appreciated and your suppliers know you value their partnership.
4. The 3-5 Year Horizon
This is your future growth strategy. Are you attending conferences, reading books and industry articles, or listening to podcasts to stay ahead? You should be looking 3 to 5 years ahead to identify threats and opportunities, turning your SWOT analysis into immediate action.
5. Working ON the Business
Identify where your specific skills can best facilitate growth. Whether it’s sales, marketing, or business development, at least one area of your operations will benefit from your direct, strategic participation.
